Predjama Castle
Set in the entrance to a huge cave Predjama castle is truly impressive and has dominated the area for over 800 years. The largest cave-castle in the world had us spellbound with it’s beauty and history, as well as it’s darker secrets of terrible torture and suffering. We purchased the audio guide which was definitely worth it as there are around 27 different stories along the way. There are quite a few steps and some are quite steep, but don’t let this put you off. A great place to visit for a couple of hours.
GetYourGuide and Viator offer a variety of tours and experiences in and around Predjama Castle. See Tripadvisor for all of the above and including restaurant, hotel, flights and rental cars. Check out Lonely Planet for guidebooks.
Postojna Cave and
baby dragons!
A 15 minute drive from the Predjama castle is Postojna cave. These impressive caves have probably been known of for many centuries, but it wasn’t until 1818 that the 24km long cave system was discovered. The world’s first cave train was constructed in 1872 enabling tourists and scientists to explore the cave further, although it only extends for 3.5kms, with a further 1.5km to go by foot. The stalactites, stalagmites and draperies are amazing and definitely worth visiting.
The caves are also the home to the world’s largest troglodytic (cave dwelling) amphibian, the dragon-like Olm. It’s actually an aquatic salamander and has adapted to a life of total darkness, so it is blind and has no pigment in it’s skin, and looks like an embryonic dragon, whatever that is!
There are a number of different ticketing options available for you to purchase for both attractions, single attraction, and a few other things to look at. We bought the cave and castle combo, here is the link for their website postojnska-jama.eu/en
If you don’t have your own transport you can take a bus or train from Ljubljana to the town of Postojna which isn’t far from the caves, and in the height of summer use the shuttles bus to and from Predjama Castle and the caves.
